The Nevada Association of the Deaf (NVAD) is a state
association affiliated with the
National Association of the Deaf (NAD). The NAD was founded in 1880 and
is the oldest and largest organization of the deaf in the United States. The
NAD along with its 50 state associations of the deaf work to improve the
lifestyle and opportunities of deaf and hard of hearing people. The History of the NVADThe Nevada Association of the Deaf was formed in 1981 primarily at the request of three teachers from Las Vegas High School who wanted to send their students to the Jr. NAD Convention. The first few years the NVAD barely existed because there were very few members who seemed not to be interested in becoming involved. The recent influx of newcomers to the state of Nevada spurred the NVAD to become the powerhouse it is today. The first Jr. NVAD Regional conference was in Riverside, California. Since 1990, two delegates of the NVAD have been representing the state of Nevada every two years at various National Association of the Deaf Conferences and Regional Conferences. The membership base of the NVAD is varied and includes
deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing adults. The affairs of the NVAD are
governed by a State Board of Directors whose members serve on a voluntary
basis. Board representatives are elected during biennial state conferences
which also provide a forum where members and representatives can shape the
future priorities of the NVAD. Meet the Board of Directors
